And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." — 2 Corinthians 12:9

Spiritual struggles are real. Some are natural. Some are circumstantial. Some are supernatural. Paul's was supernatural. God sent a messenger of Satan to humble him (v. 7). Messenger in Greek is ἄγγελος, the word behind our angel.

Whatever the source, the answer is the same: the grace of God is sufficient.

Easy to say. In our heads we answer, "But of course." Believing it in the middle of the struggle is another thing. Grace runs against the grain. We want to overcome in our own strength and our own way. It makes perfect sense. It only makes matters worse.

The wisdom of man is not the wisdom of God. As Isaiah wrote,

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," declares the LORD. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8–9).

Paul prayed for deliverance. Christ gave him something better, and Paul's reply runs against every instinct we have.

"And He has said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.' Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Corinthians 12:9–10).

Hear what Christ did not say. He did not say, "Try harder." He did not say, "Come back when you are stronger." He said His grace is enough, and He said it to a man who had asked three times and been told no.

His grace is sufficient for every need. But to know it, we must become content with our weakness. Neither the world nor our flesh will embrace this. It is still the way of life, and the power is not our own.

Your weakness is not an obstacle to His power. It is the place where His power is perfected.
