“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” What a verse of encouragement and hope for our hearts! First, the grace of the gospel is not a one-and-done moment. God does not simply save and then leave us to ourselves. By His Word and Spirit, He continues to work in us—shaping, sanctifying, and transforming us as we journey through this life. Second, our faithful God always finishes what He begins. He is not only the builder of our faith but also the completer (Hebrews 12:2). We can rest in His promises, trusting Him both in the bright days of blessing and in the dark nights of trial and affliction. Third, history itself—both the great movements of nations and the quiet details of our lives—is moving toward a glorious end. Nothing is random. All of history is teleological; it has a goal, an end, and a purpose, even your own personal life experiences. Fourth, that goal is Christ Himself. He is the center and completion of all God’s work. All things are moving toward Him. As Paul reminds us, God is “…summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth” (Ephesians 1:10). Finally, the good work God began in you will be brought to completion as He conforms you to the righteous and beautiful character of Jesus Christ. As Paul declared, “For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified” (Romans 8:29–30). When we believe God’s gospel promise in Christ, He begins in us the most sublime and beautiful work—a work He will surely bring to completion at the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. And on that day, we will see Him, we will be like Him, and we will rejoice forever in Him. Amen! |
