“How blessed are those whose way is blameless, Who walk in the law of the LORD. How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, Who seek Him with all their heart.” Psalm 119 begins with a beautiful double blessing upon those who walk in the ways of the Lord. When we think of God’s law, testimonies, precepts, and commands, we often think only in terms of behavior. Yet His ways touch every part of life. In verses 89–91 we see that even heaven and earth are established and sustained by God’s word. “Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You established the earth, and it stands. They stand this day according to Your ordinances, For all things are Your servant.” (Psalm 119:89–91) Hebrews tells us of Christ, The blessed life, then, is so much more than right behavior. Everything in creation is governed by God’s word and upheld by His power. Just as the Bible speaks of moral, ceremonial, and civil laws, there are also laws that govern mathematics, physics, chemistry, music, economics—truly every part of life. God designed all things, and He holds all things together. The Scriptures call God’s law “the law of liberty” (James 1:25; 2:12). Far from being restrictive, His laws bring freedom, beauty, and joy. They open the way for creativity, understanding, and original ideas. Wherever we walk in His ways—whether in work, study, art, play, or worship—we find blessing. His ways lead us into the fullness of life He intends. Those who reject God must still live by His laws, even as they deny Him. In His mercy they still taste some of His goodness, but only in part. It is like a thief who may enjoy what he has stolen but never knows peace. There is always emptiness, frustration, restlessness, and guilt. It is like holding a can of fresh peaches but never being able to open it—the blessing is there, yet out of reach. But for those who walk by faith in God and His word, every promise is opened wide. The blessed life belongs to them. It is the life of freedom, fullness, and joy found only in Christ, who upholds all things by the word of His power. |
