“…but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7) One of the most amazing promises of the gospel is God’s daily grace that continually cleanses us from our sins. 1 John 1:9 assures us that when we confess our sins, God—faithful and just—forgives us completely and cleanses us from all unrighteousness once and for all. Yet we also have the beautiful promise of 1 John 1:7: that the blood of Jesus keeps providing ongoing, daily cleansing from all sin. Why do we need both? First, the moment we trust Christ for salvation, we are set apart as holy in Him. Still, God’s wonderful plan includes a lifelong journey of transformation. Day by day, little by little, He is shaping us into the image of Christ until the glorious day when we will be fully like Him (Romans 8:29–30). 1 John 1:7 reminds us that Christ’s blood is more than enough to supply all the cleansing we need for every step of this journey. Second, as we walk in the light of God’s Word, we grow increasingly aware of our own unrighteousness, sinfulness, and weakness. The closer we draw to God and the more we reflect His righteousness, the more clearly we see how much we still fall short of His glory. Remarkably, the more we become like Christ, the more we recognize just how much further we have to go—and how desperately we need His ongoing transformation. It’s a bit like buying new clothes. Under the dim light of a store, it’s hard to tell black from dark blue. But step into bright sunlight, and the difference is unmistakable. The light simply reveals what was there all along. Here’s the good news: 1 John 1:7 is God’s daily gift of comfort for our consciences! As we become more aware of our sins, we can rest in the truth that Christ’s blood is fully sufficient to keep cleansing us. His grace is actively transforming us “from one degree of glory to another” (2 Corinthians 3:18) until His perfect work in us is complete. This promise is to fill our hearts with peace and joy as we walk in faith, rejoicing in the brilliant light of His Word. You are being cleansed, you are being changed every single day. This promise gives peace to our hearts and minds as we walk the walk of faith, rejoicing in the light of His Word. |
