Hebrews 2:11–12 As we celebrate the Advent season, one often overlooked aspect of the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ is this: He sings. Do you ever think of Jesus as a singer—singing in the worship of His local synagogue or in the courts of the temple? Scripture tells us that He did, and that He still does. After an extended quotation of Psalm 8, the author of Hebrews explains its implications for Christ’s incarnation: His authority over all creation, His sufferings that prepared Him to be our Savior, His tasting death for us, and His being crowned with glory and honor. Then come these astonishingly beautiful words: “He is not ashamed to call them brothers.” Pause and consider that. With all that Christ suffered because of our sin and rebellion, and despite His glorious exaltation above all things, He still delights to call us His brothers. As wonderful as that truth is, it does not stop there. From the moment of His incarnation to this very Sunday morning, what does Jesus delight to do? He loves to dwell among His brothers, to proclaim to us the name of our Father, and to lead us in singing praises to our God. How do we know this? The author of Hebrews tells us by quoting Psalm 22:22, “ I will proclaim your name to my brthern, in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” Wherever Christians gather today—where the Scriptures and the gospel are rightly proclaimed and the praises of God are faithfully sung—Jesus Christ is present. He preaches through His appointed messenger, and He leads His people in praise as they sing. So today, do not go to church merely to hear a man speak. Go to hear Christ preaching to you through His servant as the Word of God is faithfully expounded. And as you lift your voice in praise, know that it is Christ Himself who leads His brothers in the true worship of God. Christ, the Prophet of God, speaks the Word of God to the people of God. Christ, the great High Priest of God, leads the people of God in the praise of God. If Christ is the true Speaker in the worship service, what should the preacher be preaching? And if Christ is the true Song Leader among His people, what should the congregation be singing? |
