“Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His lovingkindness, In Scripture, the idea of God looking upon His people is an idiom for His blessing, care, and lovingkindness. We see this same promise of His favor in the well-loved words of Numbers 6:24–26, where the Lord’s face shines upon His people in peace. By contrast, when God turns His face away, Scripture sums it up with the word “woe.” Woe carries the weight of His just judgment and His holy, righteous wrath against all unrighteousness, as Revelation 8:13 makes clear. Yet for those who look to the Lord in reverent faith, the story is different. He delivers them from His wrath through His steadfast lovingkindness. But how can this be when we all fall short of His glory (Romans 3:23) and deserve the wages of sin, which is death (Romans 6:23)? The honest answer is yes—we are guilty. And yet, here is the good news: Jesus Christ has already borne God’s wrath for our sins, once and for all. Because of Him, we receive not judgment but mercy, not woe but blessing. “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit…” This is why the psalmist can proclaim with confidence the fullness of redemption for all who place their hope in the Lord: “O Israel, hope in the LORD; For with the LORD there is lovingkindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.” The Lord’s eye looks upon on all who trust in Christ, and His redemption covers every sin. In Him, you are safe from wrath, held in mercy, and kept forever in His steadfast care. |
